Hampta Pass is Himachal's most dramatic pass crossing. Trek from the lush green pine forests of Jobra and meadows of Balu ka Ghera in Manali, cross the snow-covered pass at 14,000 feet, and descend into the barren, rocky cold desert of Lahaul & Spiti, finishing with a drive to Chandratal Lake.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Meet in Manali. Drive through 40 hairpin bends to Jobra. Start a short 2-hour trek along Rani River to the Chika campsite (10,100 ft). Overnight in tents.

Climb gradually along Rani river through boulders. Walk through alpine meadows filled with wild buttercups. Arrive at Balu Ka Ghera (11,900 ft). Overnight in camps.

Summit day. Steep climb over snow patches to Hampta Pass (14,100 ft / 4,270m). Witness the sharp contrast between green Manali and dry Lahaul. Descend to Shea Goru camp (12,900 ft). Overnight.

Trek down to Chatru road-head. Board vehicles and drive to the magnificent Chandratal Lake (Lake of the Moon). Return to Chatru campsite. Overnight in tents.

Drive back from Chatru to Manali through the Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass. Arrive in Manali by afternoon. Onward departure.

  • Carry a valid government ID (Aadhar Card, Passport, Voter ID) at all times. PAN Card is not accepted as proof of identity at army checkpoints.
  • Climatic conditions at high elevations can change rapidly. Always follow instructions of the tour guide/expedition leader.
  • Consumption of alcohol or drugs during active trekking or riding hours is strictly prohibited.
  • Ensure you are adequately covered by adventure travel insurance.
